In 2013, ENVISION developed a vision statement and master plan for a largely vacant parcel on 3rd Avenue in the Bronx. Through interviews with key stakeholders, we developed a conceptual program for what would become the Bronx Center for Healthy Communities (BCHC).
In 2016, a developer began to plan, and then build, the overall project, including affordable housing and retail spaces. ENVISION was retained as Architect for the Health Center. We created a robust concept design for a $20M 50,000sf fit-up, providing a welcoming and inviting community facility. The dynamic setting for wellness transformation, and expanded branding and communications, are the foundation to create tangible healthcare improvements for the neighborhood, and beyond. Based on a study conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the community is considered one of the least healthy in New York State. The project aims to galvanize this population to embrace strong health and wellness priorities. The mission is to provide care delivery, support, resources and opportunities that empower this community.
ENVISION conceptualized, programmed, planned and designed the 50,000sf fit-up, including providing CON documents to NYS DOH. Healthcare resources within the Center include Urgent Care, WIC, Women's Health and Imaging, and Pediatrics. The 2nd floor of the facility bolsters the sensibility of treating the "whole person," providing additional resources and services for healthy living. A teaching kitchen for culinary medicine, and supporting multi-purpose spaces for gathering, community activities, and fitness are features. The teaching kitchen will also be used by visiting chefs, community education, and fundraising events, and sits adjacent to an outdoor terrace. The two levels are connected via large, bright atrium facing 3rd Avenue. Lobby, circulation, waiting and reception areas were designed to encourage community and curiosity, while encouraging the exploration of ways to develop a great state of well-being for patients, visitors, families and staff.
